AZUA instructor, Steve Mattingly, listens in the background as Host and President of District 2, Mike Shoemaker goes over the agenda for the day.
Mike Shoemaker (middle) acting as the catcher assisting Steve Mattingly, AZUA instructor (right in black), in demonstrating the proper plate work techniques.
Steve Mattingly, AZUA instructor, demonstrates that the first part of umpiring behind home plate is proper placement of the feet. The plate umpire must make sure the feet placement will put the umpire in the slot.

Mike Shoemaker, acting as the catcher, and Clif Shaw, playing the batter, while Steve Mattingly (black jacket) defines to the class what the slot is, how to obtain the position in the slot and, most important, why the plate umpire must be in the slot.

Western Little League Umpire Supervisor Sam Palmer was on site to share his knowledge and experience with the students.
Notice the picture on the left. The plate umpire's stance in this soft toss drill isn't that bad. As a matter of fact, the head height is good and it seems he is in the slot a little. In the right picture, AZUA instructor, Steve Mattingly, gives this umpire one-on-one instruction explaining the importance of understanding why and how he needs to be in the slot area. Mattingly does this by showing the placement of the umpire's feet, then discussing the width of the stance, amount of squat and the torso lean.

In this portion of training with District 2, understanding the proper position for plays at first base, with no runners on, with a batted ball to the infield on force plays is broken down step-by-step.
This picture is the opposite of the pictures on the left. Although the umpire is set up for the proper position for a force play at first base with no runners on, the throw isn't always perfect and umpires have to adjust. The umpire must have play recognition to adjust for the swipe tags at first. Play recognition is developed over the years with experience.

"It was an honor to assist District 2 Little League Umpires maximize their potential. It was obvious by watching the training ethics of the students, that the umpires truly have pride in themselves, District 2 and the game of baseball. The time donated is a direct reflection of their commitment to the children of little league. Mike Shoemaker and the rest of the personnel that made this clinic available does not go unnoticed and their hard work should be rewarded. Great job District 2!"
