"Getting the Call Right!"

This umpire crew had a difficult situation with a ground rule double verses the baseball being alive and in play. The crew handled the situation perfect. After the head coach complained about the call (far left picture), the crew chief got the crew together and discussed what happened. The crew chief followed NCAA protocol of "Getting The Call Right". The far right picture shows the crew chief discussing the call with the other head coach.

Notice the umpire's timing? The picture on the left has the runner being tagged. The picture on the right has the fielder bringing the glove up after the tag. The umpire waits to see if the fielder has secure possession and/or voluntary release after the tag.

Notice the umpire, Travis Katzenmeier, taking his hand to the mask and not the mask to the hand. He is able to keep sight of the baseball and see any "funny" business between the catcher and batter. Some umpires have a bad habit of looking down to take off the mask. It only takes a second or two for something to happen while the umpire isn't watching.

Jason Rogers' head height is in excellent position! Plate umpire's head height plays an important role of getting pitches correct. The plate umpire must be able to see the baseball entirely to the catcher's mitt.
Travis Katzenmeier also is demonstrating the same head height position that is needed to seeing the pitch. If the umpire's vision is blocked due to IMPROPER HEAD HEIGHT, the umpire's JUDGMENT WILL BE EFFECTED.

Travis Katzenmeier strike mechanic is assertive, smooth and visible. Great Job Travis!

When a pitcher gets hurt and the coach and/or the trainer want to assess the problem, the plate umpire needs to be out there the entire time. The coach shall not discuss strategy, unless he wants to be charged a conference. If the pitcher, trainer and/or the coach request to throw a couple of pitches to see how the injury feels, the plate umpire should allow as many as he deems necessary.
